Using playdough in children’s activities adds a fun twist to playing and learning and kids love it! Alphabet playdough mats are a fantastic way to learn letters of the alphabet and practice letter formulation to develop writing skills.
What makes these letter mats interesting?
Firstly, children use their hands to roll and manipulate dough to form letters. Anything that involves them getting their hands dirty is enjoyable for them and develops their creative skills. This also develops their sensory skills.
Your child gets to learn how to form letters and this sets an excellent foundation for developing those writing skills early on.
The alphabet mats include lowercase letters so your child will learn how to form both uppercase and lowercase letters. So if they have a challenge matching uppercase and lowercase letters, this activity will help them practice that.
Last but not least, rolling and tracing the letters with playdough really works on their fine motor skills. These are critical skills that they use to join two puzzle pieces together or to hold a pencil to write.
Using The Uppercase Lowercase Playdough Activity
This printable has 26 alphabet playdough mats with uppercase and lowercase letters to formulate. There is also a section to match the alphabets, as well as a picture to practice beginning sounds.
For this activity, you will need:
- Alphabet playdough mats pdf (download at the bottom of the post)
- Playdough in different colors
- Laminating machine to make the mats reusable
Print the alphabet mats, get the playdough and you can start forming letters.
Start with letter A and go through all the 26 letters. Ask your child to identify the letter and its lowercase version. Next, let them identify the picture and tell you what it is. Stress out the beginning sound so they associate it with the letter on the mat.
Make playdough strings or snakes and place them inside the letters to practice letter formulation. It is fine if they make fat or weird-looking chunks of dough, as long as they make it fit inside the letters.
Now, look at the circled letters. Put playdough on top of the circled letters that match with the uppercase and lowercase letters on the mat and put them.
Talk your child through the whole activity, sing songs, and make funny characters in the process. They will be more engaged and interested in learning when having fun.
You can also use other items in place of playdough, just to switch things up. Use finger paint or yarn to trace the letters, markers, stickers, or pom poms to match the letters.
